Founded in 1998 by Patricia Nightingale in Njoro, Kenya, Kenana Knitters is on a mission to “change lives stitch by stitch.” By providing dignified, fair-wage work to over 300 knitters and 200 spinners, the organisation empowers rural women to overcome economic barriers and gender inequality. Using tools like recycled bicycle wheels to spin local wool, these artisans create high-quality crafts in a flexible, family-friendly environment that fits the rhythm of their daily lives.
People who are passionate about Kenana Knitters, a family that is made up of friends, neighbours and relatives. There are numerous threads that connect the knitters to each other, who all love being part of the team.
Kenana Knitters provides not only a fair wage but also, regular steady employment. Creating a space where the women are able to take charge of their own lives and build a brighter future for themselves and their families. Ensuring the knitters are treated with respect and dignity.

At Kenana Knitters, their commitment to the artisans goes far beyond providing a fair wage. Believing in holistic empowerment, offering vital programs that bridge the gap to opportunities previously out of reach. From Adult Literacy Classes that allow women to reclaim the education they were once denied, to Free Health & Welfare Clinics providing essential medical screenings and counselling, we bring life-changing resources directly to our workshop. Protecting our most vulnerable—including expectant mothers and the elderly—through targeted nutritional support, ensuring that those who care for so many others are never left to go without themselves.
